This cookhouse was probably a place like a kitchen where food was prepared. What kind of place was it? Cooking was done on a hearth. It is thought that the earthenware cooking jar was placed on a supporting stand in the hearth, grains such as rice were boiled and seafood and vegetables were cooked with it. As there were no wells or other form of water supply, it is thought that vegetables were washed and cut by the side of the river, where there was an abundant supply of water. Above the hearth were suspended fire racks. These protected against sparks flying upward, and were also useful for drying things. We can imagine that meat and fish were placed here to be dried. Perhaps jars of water were kept in the corners for storage. It is thought that the food prepared here was set out on a stand in a small hut, and was then carried to the members of the governing class.
