What kind of food did people eat in the Yayoi period? From the carbide residue in jug-shaped earthenware cooking vessels and wooden ladles that were excavated, it is thought that people perhaps ate a kind of porridge made by adding water to grains such as rice, wheat and millet. Apart from that, it is evident from bones and seeds excavated from various ruins that their diet also included food from the sea, rivers and lakes; wild animals such as deer, wild boar, wild duck and geese; domestic animals such as pigs and dogs; and fruit and vegetables such as different types of gourd and peaches. The Gishiwajinden tells that the ancient Japanese ate raw vegetables in summer and winter. Salt was already being manufactured and so it is also possible that they ate pickles or something similar. The Gishiwajinden also writes that alcohol was popular. It seems there have been drunkards from that time on.
