Yoshinogari Keitai-Guide
Both unhulled rice and rice ears from the Yayoi period have been discovered. It is known that in the Nara period rice was garnered in storehouses for the purpose of taxation in both unhulled form and as ears. Storehouses containing ears of rice were used for rice that would be threshed and consumed in a comparatively short time. Storehouses with unhulled rice were used for long-term emergency stores. There is a relatively large group of raised structures around here. This group of structures, which are also close to the market tower that kept watch over the market, is assumed to be storage areas for unhulled rice used for emergency food supplies and for the military.
