Minaminaikaku (Southern Inner Enclosure)

The Southern Inner Enclosure is surrounded by a moat and a palisade, and a watchtower is located on a protrusion of the moat. It has the same shape as the Northern Inner Enclosure, indicating that it was a special place with high status within the Yoshinogari moat-enclosed settlement. In contrast with the Northern Inner Enclosure, where ruins and relics thought to be connected with religious ceremonies have been discovered, the Southern Inner Enclosure is the site of the discovery of ruins of pit dwellings, which served as residences, and many everyday utensils including valuable items made of iron. From this evidence, it is thought that the Southern Inner Enclosure was the home of the king who founded the country and members of the governing class.
