Yoshinogari Keitai-Guide
A number of holes were discovered going off at an angle on each side of the road that goes through the gate at the entrance of the Yoshinogari settlement. This is thought to have been the site of an abatis and palisade to defend against enemy incursions. An abatis is a row of trees and bushes arranged so that the branches protrude at an angle toward the outside. Along with palisades consisting of sharpened stakes, they were built in places such as battlefields as a temporary means of defense in the Middle Ages. In Yayoi period ruins, they were also found at the Asahi ruins in Aichi prefecture. The Yayoi period was one of conflict, and this is one feature that shows the defenses of the whole settlement were strengthened.
