Yoshinogari Keitai-Guide
At the Yoshinogari ruins, cloth sewn into sleeves has been excavated from burial jars thought to be those of wealthy people. Based on the Gishiwajinden, it was thought that Yayoi period clothing was not sewn and had no sleeves. As a result of this discovery, however, it has become clear that clothing existed made of material that had been sewn together. At that time, the weaving of cloth required great effort, and it was therefore extremely valuable. Garments with sleeves required a great deal of material, and so such garments are likely to have been a luxury. It is thought that only high-status individuals would wear sleeved garments such as the one seen on this doll.
