Yoshinogari Keitai-Guide
This pit dwelling is one of two on the southern side of the market. In this zone, there are also buildings thought to be small raised storehouses that were probably attached to it. From this arrangement, it is assumed that it was the residence of people who looked after the market. More examples of this kind of pit dwelling were discovered in the center of the market on the northern side than here. The Yoshinogari moat-enclosed settlement’s conception of space, under which the north was considered superior, and the south inferior, sheds light on this. It is likely that this residence belonged to people of lower status than the market custodian’s assistants who lived in the pit dwellings on the northern side.
