Yoshinogari Keitai-Guide
Welcome to Yoshinogari Historical Park. Yoshinogari Historical Park dates back about 1,700 years to the end of the Yayoi period, and the restored historical park consists of a large moat-enclosed settlement built around the Yoshinogari burial mound and the Yoshinogari ruins. Covering an area of 40 hectares, it is Japan’s largest Yayoi period moat-enclosed settlement. In the northernmost part, surrounded by a moat, is a tomb enshrining ancestral spirits, known as the Northern Burial Mound. There is an altar on the south side. This layout is based on the so-called ‘north superior, south inferior’ concept, under which north was believed to be the more sacred direction. The layout of the ruins, with a watchtower, a palisade, a large group of storehouses and a ceremonial hall, is noteworthy because it is a detailed image of the Yamataikoku Nation of the Yayoi period given in the Chinese book Gishiwajinden. The ruins are very valuable as they tell us about the society, the lives and spiritual activities of people of the Yayoi period.
